Mel Alston Jr is a male indie singer/songwriter from Philadelphia. His music is an alternative mixture of Soul, Rock & R&B. He sang as a child and played several instruments including Piano, trumpet and trombone. He attended Howard University where he played trumpet for the “Showtime Marching Band.

After finishing college, he began to act and sing in local plays and performing local shows in Philadelphia from WarmDaddy’s to the TLA & The Wells Fargo Center. He has opened up for Nelly, Kindred and the Family Soul & Freeway.

Mel worked on his first. project “Movie Muzik” with producer Willie Stone which was released in 2014. After gaining momentum with his singles “Purple” and “The ImpossiBle” , He quickly followed with a Live EP Movie MuZik: Directors Cut with The Sound Barrier Experience. Alston Jr. shows a wide range of vocal influences on Movie Muzik: Director’s Cut, with the aforementioned likeness to John Legend and additional allusions to singers like Prince on “Purple” and Lenny Kravitz on “The Impossible.” It seems as though he is still honing in on a niche somewhere between R&B and rock. It’s clear that eventually, we won’t need to compare Alston Jr. to other musicians, as he continues to cultivate his own unique sound.

That sonic signature seems to be evolving, and Alston Jr. has the songwriting prowess to distinguish his voice from others and he also has the aid of expert production from Stone to make his musical vision a reality. The day is not far off where one will be able to play any amount of Alston Jr.’s music and immediately identify it as his alone  breaking new boundaries with a raw sound influenced by Rock & R&B.
